Curator's Comment
This charming image is one of a series of prints by the artist inspired by English nursery rhymes.
Terence McDiddler is one of Adrienne Craddock's favourite rhymes:
'Terence McDiddler The three-stringed fiddler Can charm, if you please, The fish from the seas.'
The artist comments: 'It's short, sweet and has great rhythm. I have already done a few 'seafaring' images. This rhyme conjures up a jolly image of a fisherman, who, despite having only three strings to his fiddle, is a masterful musician able to charm the fishes out of the sea. I have an admiration of violinists having tried - unsuccessfully - to learn to play this instrument myself.'
As ever, the artist creates a fantasy world with touches of humour. Terence is unable to swim and wears a large lifebelt. Fish leap around and one appears to have leapt into his top pocket. I also like the way the picture is alive with sweeping, curvilinear forms - the waves, the fish and even the broken violin string.
