This picture features in a short film by our curator John Sheeran about Adrienne Craddock's Chanticleer set of prints, which you can watch by clicking on 'Curator's Choice' in the dark grey box above.
Each print was produced in an edition of 20 and is signed by the artist. This copy is an artist's proof and has a different title from those in the edition: 'The Widow Woman & Molly'.
Each picture is hand-printed and painted by the artist,so colouring and appearance can vary from print to print.
We have further copies of each print from the set, and are selling the prints both individually and as a set of 10.
Curator's Comment
This picture is the first in a series of 10 hand-painted drypoint prints by British artist Adrienne Craddock which tell a comic fable about a cockerel Chanticleer, his female companion Pertelote, and a scheming fox Sir Daun Russel. The version of the Chanticleer story used by the artist is taken from Chaucer's 'The Nun's Priest's Tale'.
The picture introduces the story. It is set out almost like a stage, framed by curtains at a window, with the figures looking out to the place where the story unfolds. The woman, 'a dairy woman of a kind' with spoon in hand, and egg cup, toast and milk bottle on the table, has her sheep Molly living with her. She is a strong and eccentric character. The cockerel Chanticleer sits on top of a tractor in the farmyard. The tractor and distant chimney show it is a contemporary image.
