Mary Lord was born and has lived in West Yorkshire, UK all her life. She works exclusively as a landscape painter and has her studio on the outskirts of Leeds. Her paintings rarely depict a specific view, but are conceived as personal impressions of journeys through particular stretches of the countryside, especially the Pennine hills and Yorkshire dales, which the artist has known for many years. Her art is characterised by a confident handling of paint which is often restricted to a palette of autumnal colours. It reveals a keen sensitivity to the subtle beauties of the passing seasons and an empathy for the land itself. In her paintings, the landscape is viewed from on high and unfolds in a gentle rhythm. Trees, farm buildings and fields blend into the scene registered with a few marks of the brush as accents of colour. A major retrospective exhibition of Mary Lord's work was held at Leeds City Art Gallery in 2001 to celebrate the artist's 70th birthday. Her work is well represented in art museums in the North of England, including Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Hull.
